Yuu Kanda was born in Japan to simple parents who lived in a small rural region kind of near to Tokyo. This area was ruled over by a man who dubbed himself 'The Earl' and had his own little mercenary army. The elite of these were dubbed 'Noah' and the rest simply as 'the akuma'. He used these to rule with an iron fist over the region and used the money he got from the locals to bribe the government into leaving him alone. One day, many houses in his village were burned down for not paying taxes and Kanda's parents were killed. After wandering for a few days and almost starving to death, little Yuu was picked up by a traveler and taken in. The traveler was an enemy of the Earl and encouraged the small boy's feelings of wanting to learn to fight so one day he could take down the Earl. They escaped Japan and moved to America, where Yuu started to just go by 'Kanda' as being called 'Yuu' reminded him too much of home and upset him. He enrolled in school and got a lot of attention despite rebuffing people at every opportunity. The once kind and happy boy closed himself off and pushed people away, instead focusing on his studies and working out at home where he was starting to learn martial arts. One particular boy, named Lavi, liked to try to get Kanda to open up and got repeatedly hit for calling him 'Yuu'. He always got good marks and was considered almost a prodigy when it came to the physical classes. He never showed any enthusiasm for the "traditional" sports instead focusing wholly on his karate. When he moved to high school, he enrolled in the fencing program and found he was extremely skilled at it, quickly picking up awards left, right and centre. He still loved his martial arts; but this was definitely his real passion. At this point his traveler guardian went missing and is presumed dead. Kanda learned to rely only on himself. To his chagrin, however, Lavi also went to the same high school and got hit almost daily by the épée for irritating Kanda and his reputation for being "an antisocial humbug" only increased. Of course, the truth is that he actually considers Lavi a friend - he'd just never admit it if he can help it. There was one person during these years he became fond of, but they went missing and Kanda promised himself he would find them again. Graduating with out any issue, Kanda applied for Evergrove to continue in his athletic training so that he would one day be powerful enough to cut down the akuma, Noah and The Earl and take his revenge. | |
